I found that one way to get closer to the Cremonese makers of the 1700 is to follow the Cremonese method for making violins.  Ribs are bent around an internal mold which allows room for adjustments. The blocks are willow or spruce, Stradivari preferred willow or poplar and Guarneri del Gesu spruce.
